A large team of Audi and Volkswagen engineers have been hot-weather testing vehicles in Death Valley, California.

This trip out, spy photographers have captured the 2013 Audi S3 for the first time.

Though still wearing some heavy camouflage, we do manage to make out the shape of the next-generation A3/S3, with some styling cues of the front-fascia borrowed from the newer A5/A6 range, as well as get a look at that quad-exhaust at the rear which is a mark of the S3.

Under the hood of the next S3, we expect an updated 2.0 liter TFSI unit with around 280 PS (206 kW / 276 bhp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.
