VW will introduce a new performance variant of the Golf named the GTE.
With 'E' standing for electric, this plug-in hybrid will use the same powerplant as Audi A3 e-tron. Power will come from a 1.4L TSI turbo four-cylinder connected with an electric motor for a total output of 204hp. The numbers for the GTE aren't great, but moderate for a hybrid. 0-62mph will take 7.6 seconds with the 6-speed DSG transmission and it will have a top speed of 135mph. Similar to the GTD, performance will only come from the GTI sourced parts including suspension, brakes, and interior styling. It does feature unique front LED daytime running lights, and blue accent plaid seats.
In pure electric mode it can travel up to 31 miles. With both engines functioning, it can travel up to 584 miles. Also, range as a plug-in hybrid will return up to 130 mpg (US).
There will be an App available from Volkswagen that will access all the GTE's info/data and control various functions remotely.
It will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month, and is expected to hit the market next year (2015), for Europe only at this time.
