Homemade Electric Beetle races a Tesla Roadster

Motivated by two seperate electric motors generating over 1200ft-lbs of torque, this garage project electric VW Beetle runs an 11 second quarter mile, not only spanking the Tesla Roadster in the next lane, but also just about every factory Ferrari, Porsche or Vette you could throw at it as well.

Dubbed the Black Current III, this Beetle is the work of two brothers named Olly and Sam Young, who began the project six years ago, experimenting with various drivetrain configurations along the way. Now the car claims the title of Fastest Zero Emissons car in Europe thanks to two electric fork truck motors, 60 Odyssey PC680 12V batteries and a Zilla 2K motor controller all delivering 1200 lb-ft of torque to the ground and pushing the car from 0-60 in 3 seconds flat.
