This year at the fearsome Nurburgring 24 hours race a road-registered Porsche 911 GT3 RS turned up, stayed on track without any problems till the end, finished an astonishing 13th, and then drove off home! This is possibly the best publicity for Porsche, as it shows that their road-going cars are so fast and reliable to tolerate 24 hours of constant torture without a flaw. It’s just amazing!

The four drivers taking turns behind the wheel in the Nürburgring 24 Hours were former German Touring Car Championship driver Roland Asch, racer and TV commentator Patrick Simon (Germany) and journalists Chris Harris (Great Britain) and Horst von Saurma (Germany) who each drove consistently fast and perfect laps.

For a day and a night the car ran like clockwork, leaving the mechanics with only refuelling, tyre changes and cleaning the windows on which to concentrate during the pit stops. With the exception of replacing the front brakes – as planned – during the race, no further maintenance or repairs were necessary

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the best version of the 911, powered by a .8-litre, six-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine. The road-going version costs around £105,920, and even that is pretty much race-ready. The Nurburgring car however had a few small tweaks for the race like short transmission ratio for racing purposes and some aerodynamic modifications for more downforce. It also features dynamic engine mounts; Depending on the road or track environment, the mounts change in their stiffness and damping effect, improving the connection between the engine and body when driving under racing conditions.
