Rendering – 2012 VW Golf

The 7th generation VW Golf is already in the works. Designing of the car is underway by the famous designer Walter de Silva, who is credit with designing many of the existing VW’s. The design shows clear links to the Scirocco sports hatchback.

VW’s Twin Drive hybrid technology will debut on the Golf for the very first time. Combining a 1.5-litre diesel with three electric motors, it will give 48km (30 miles) of electric-only traveling and it will return a 113mpg average fuel consumption. This is in the same tune of the Chevrolet Volt.

HCCI engines will also debut on the new Golf for the first time. The petrol engine behaves like a diesel, with no spark plug and combustion due to sheer compression. The VW Group’s new 7-speed DSG will make its way too.

Three wheelbases are planned – short (2630mm) for the hatchbacks, midsize (2680mm) for Jetta, Tiguan and Golf Variant, long (2790mm) for Touran and Tiguan XL (USA and China only). Luggage capacity will also go up accordingly, from 405 litres in the Golf to 455 litres in the Golf Plus to 505 litres in the Golf Variant estate

The new Golf is expected to arrive in 2012 with a raft of new engines and body styles
