In a surprise move, Volkswagen has introduced the E-Scooter concept at Auto Shanghai 2011.

Envisioned as a personal mobility device for megacities, the concept features a nickel-metal hydride battery which sends power to a 350 watt electric motor. This setup enables the bike to hit a top speed of approximately 48 km/h (30 mph) and travel up to 40 km (25 miles) on a single charge.

While the E-Scooter is technically a concept, Volkswagen is considering a production model that could rented at transport hubs and city centers.
