VW to introduce new 1-liter concept: XL1

For the past decade, Volkswagen has been toying around with a car that averages 1 L/100 km (235 mpg US). Now, a new report is indicating the company will unveil another "One Liter" concept at the Qatar Motor Show presumably named XL1.

Information is scarce, but says the car will feature a two-cylinder diesel engine and an electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery. The overall premise seems to echo the L1 concept, which debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, but the plug-in hybrid technology would undoubtedly increase fuel efficiency beyond the already impressive 1.2 L/100 km (196 mpg US).

The concept is slated to be unveiled later this month and rumors suggest it could go into production in 2013.
